Dante Aleksandr Penman (b. 1986, Devon, England)

I started my visual art journey in 2004, as part of a group photography show documenting my identity as a homeless teenager in coastal Wales. Inspired by the story-telling aspect of art, I then added sculpture, painting, traditional design and printmaking to my repertoire, in my pursuit of a multidisciplinary practice. I am greatly influenced by early 20th century Modernism, dreams, cosmology, biology and the occult, while literature and music are key components to my creative process.

In the spring of 2013, I graduated from the School of the Photographic Arts in Ottawa, Canada where I focused on light & chemical experimentation as well as traditional studio portraiture. During this time, I published my first book, Argentum et Lux, based on my work with the lumen process. My first solo exhibition, Liebe Handwerk, was a presentation of various media inspired by the author, H. P. Lovecraft. The collection of work included sculptures made from fungi, linocut printmaking, chemigram prints and collections of items and notes from the creation process. My second published book was a collection of hand-printed linocuts, accompanied by a short essay on the origin of the project as well as the themes, landscapes and pantheon created by Lovecraft.

Since 2014 I have been writing a collection of short stories tied together by common themes, while exploring genres and narrative styles. Parallel to this project is a visual component where I hope to bring each story to life using stop-motion animation, sculpture and printmaking.
